2017 – Leopards battered by Storm
The return from injury of captain Mike Martin couldn’t prevent Leopards crashing to a tenth straight loss as they went down 89-63 against Hemel Storm
They matched the visitors in the opening period, with AJ Roberts sparking an 8-0 run capped by a three-point play from Martin after Hemel had scored the first four points. The visitors replied with a 9-0 run of their own but Roberts converted an and-one to ensure his side were only trailing 20-18 at the first break.
Having scored only three points in the fourth period at Solent the, Leopards’ offence again completely dried up in the second quarter as they were outscored 24-6 to effectively end the game as a contest. It took four minutes for Martin to get the scoreboard moving again, and that was the only score from the hosts for almost eight minutes before Bennett scored their only other field goal as they went into the locker room down by 20 points.
Dominic Scott-Robinson opened the second half with a trey, and the young Oaklands Academy player proved a rare bright spark for the home side as his nine points, three rebounds and two assists earned him the Curves & Couture MVP award. The visitors outscored the Big Cats 19-13 in the third period to lead by 24 at the final break, before the sides split 46 points in the fourth quarter to end the game.
Former Leopards’ waterboy Jack Burnell came back to haunt the Big Cats as he hit 14 of his 17 points in the final stanza to lead his team to victory.
