2014 – LEOPARDS STAY PERFECT
Leopards continued their perfect start to the NBL Division One season with a comfortable 83-53 victory against Newham Neptunes on Sunday .
Having won their first league games by a combined aggregate of just 12 points, the Brentwood Centre crowd were treated to a second half blowout as the Big Cats improved to 6-0 in league play .
Dave Ajumobi was again the main man for Robert Youngblood’s side with 25 points and seven rebounds, with Will Ashby adding 15 points and four assists . Byron Richards marked his return from injury with 12 points, while Albert Margai completed a quartet of former Neptunes in action against their old club with nine points, eight assists and six rebounds .
Ajumobi opened the scoring with a trey, and Leopards poured in the first ten points and held the visitors scoreless for more than four minutes as they took a 21-11 lead into the first break .
The second period started with another Ajumobi three-pointer off a Richards assist and although Dougie Bennett replied with a trey, the lead never dipped into single figures before a pair of Ajumobi free-throws sent the home side into the locker room with a 39-22 lead .
Ajumobi again opened the scoring in the third period but the visitors had their best spell of the game as they reeled off ten straight points to take the Leopards’ lead into single digits for the first time since the early stages .
Inevitably it was Ajumobi who broke the run, and the Big Cats closed out the quarter on a 13-4 run to go into the final break 56-39 ahead .
Richards hit a jump shot to open the fourth period, and with the visitors having lost Bennett through injury they noticeably tired, leaving the Big Cats to wrap up the win with a 27-14 final stanza .
Waynes Yeboah (20), Anthony Okereafor (14) and Faruq Bilal (12) led Neptunes with only the latter sitting down at any point in the game, having a brief 18- second breather .
