2013 – Carnegie edged out in Basildon
There was just one game on February 19 in the final decade or so of Leopards, and unfortunately it’s a game that I’ve been unable to trace a report for. Certainly a 76-72 thriller against Leeds Carnegie at Basildon Sporting Village would have ensured that I wrote one.
Anyway, a Leopards team who were closing in on the Division One title made hard work of the victory, letting a 22-15 first period lead slip as Matt Newby’s team outscored the Big Cats 24-21 in the second period and 21-16 in the second to lead by a point going into the final break. But led by 36 points from Vernon Teel – and I’m pretty sure he got a triple-double – and 20 from Ousman Krubally, Dejan Mehevic’s side outscored the visitors 17-12 in the fourth period to take the win.
The fact that Zak Wells was the third highest Leopards’ scorer on six points just highlighted how the American pair dominated. Dave Ajumobi who went on to play for Leopards scored 12 points for the visitors.
